Resource Highlight – A Child’s Work: The Importance of Fantasy Play by Vivian Gussan Paley

Oct 3, 2024

As we continue to highlight some of the fantastic resource books available for borrowing from our Early Childhood Resource Library, this week Tamara shares their thoughts on one of the books written by Vivian Gussan Paley, “A Child’s Work: The Importance of Fantasy Play.”

Tamara writes: “As Early Childhood Educators and professionals a lot of the reading we have to do is so dry, clinical, and distant. While staying on top of child development research, the news, think pieces, etc. is important to our field I have always questioned if there was a way to deliver it that didn’t feel like licking sandpaper.

I have Etovre Vese to thank for many things and one of them is introducing me to Vivian Paley. Her work has influenced my practice immeasurably. She weaves anecdotal and storytelling in a way that makes all concepts approachable and relatable, which I try to embody in my professional practice. She really hammers home that children learn through story and so do we. It’s about time that we remember children’s learning tools can empower adults and children are the best teachers.”
