From Needs to Possibilities: Understanding What Children Need
Inclusion begins with understanding what children need to participate, connect, communicate, learn, and belong. In this session, early learning educators will explore how to move beyond labels, behaviors, and perceived deficits to identify the underlying needs that may be influencing a child’s experience. Participants will consider how needs emerge in relationship with environments, routines, expectations, and other people, and will practice identifying and prioritizing a need area that can guide responsive planning. Connections to the BC Early Learning Framework and BC Core Competencies will help educators see children’s needs as starting points for growth, participation, and belonging rather than problems to be fixed.
