We offer materials that nurture the growing mind and encourage PLAY for children under the age of six. We have a selection of art supplies, such as construction paper, paint, glue and more! We also carry a variety of toys and materials from brands such as Hape, Early Learning Resources, Grapat, Grimms, Little Larch, Native Northwest and Schylling. Drop by and see us!

September 30th marks the National Day for Truth an

September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation also known as Orange Shirt Day. It is a day to honour the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

We'd like to share several events that are happening in the community to honour this day. Please note for all clickable links to these events please see our Facebook post.

September 29 from 3pm-5pm, join Skookum Surrey at Holland Park (13428 – Old Yale Road) for an afternoon of drumming, sharing, tea, and bannock.

Math Connections Through Making and Creating

In this session, Janice will share several math-making projects using easily accessible materials such as paper, sticks and recyclables. Participants will engage in projects such as origami, weaving, and box puzzles and through the process will be encouraged to make their own mathematical connections. Janice will highlight connections to the BC mathematics curriculum and provide suggestions for resources to support participants with incorporating these projects into their classrooms, before and after school programs or childcare settings.

Yoga and Mindfulness for Self-Regulation: Creating a Mindful Classroom

In this workshop, you’ll learn a variety of hands-on activities to easily integrate yoga and mindfulness into the home, classroom, or therapeutic environment. Practical tools such as child-friendly breathing techniques, mindful movement activities, games for connection and community, and guided relaxations will be demonstrated in ways that are easy to implement, bringing a joyful connection to children’s lives. Children’s yoga helps to develop essential tools such as self-regulation, and a strong mind-body connection, and introduces skills that help children to find a sense of inner calm. These tools are gifts that can transform the lives of the children that receive them. Come join us for this fun and interactive introduction to mindful yoga for children.

We make a lot of playdough here on a weekly basis

We make a lot of playdough here on a weekly basis and thought we'd share our favourite recipe with you!

PLAYDOUGH RECIPE

You will need:
2 cups plain flour
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
½ cup salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1.5 cups boiling water
Food colouring (optional)

Mix the flour and cream of tartar in one bowl. In another bowl mix the salt, oil and hot water. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, stirring until combined.

Allow to cool, then take it out of the bowl and knead the dough until smooth and all the stickiness is gone. This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency! (If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right). A tip from our team: if you choose to add food colouring, throw on a pair of gloves before kneading to keep your hands from getting stained!

Store in air tight bag or container in the refrigerator.
