Understanding child development is crucial for early identification and intervention when developmental concerns arise. This workshop aims to empower those working with children to recognize red flags in child development and effectively communicate with families about these concerns. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and anecdotes, participants will gain skills and confidence in identifying red flags, facilitating discussions with families, referring (or helping the family to refer) to other services and, sometimes, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Participants will explore:
- Early Identification: Key milestones and indicators of typical child development versus potential delays.
- Common (and Not-So-Common) Red Flags: Signs that may signal developmental concerns in areas such as motor skills, language acquisition, and social-emotional development.
- Communication Strategies: Approaches to initiate sensitive conversations with families about developmental observations, emphasizing empathy, active listening, and cultural sensitivity.
- Resources and Support: Accessing community resources, services and referral forms to support children and families effectively.
Presenters: Brittany Bentley and Jessica Parker
