Re-purposing old magazines to explore collage has many benefits within a childcare program. Be sure to have a recycle bin nearby this cut and paste activity and talk about where the scrap bits go. Encourage the children to help tidy up during and after the activity and model the behaviors you wish to see at the table.
Not sure about having children use scissors by themselves? Sit with them, supervise and join in, hand over hand with younger children, appoint helping jobs to the older ones, talk about safety and what you see in the pages; listen to the children. Pretend, laugh and speculate.
This type of busy, challenging work elicits discussions, encourages children to ask for help, fosters fine motor, literacy and creative thinking processes while strengthening recycling practices in your program.
